Loyal Studios Provides Cameras and Technical Support to “Ghost Protocol”

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

Burbank California (December, 2011):  Although the blockbuster hit Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol was shot primarily with the IMAX camera system, there were several complicated sequences that relied on the HD cameras and technical systems from the innovative people at Loyal Studios and Pro HD Rentals.

Tom Cruise Mission Impossible

Tom Cruise Behind the Scenes with Brad Bird

Director Brad Bird comes from an animation background, and is noted for meticulously story-boarding every shot in the Movie–sometimes going through several revisions before achieving his vision of how the final sequence is to be shot. “Our teams worked with SkyDance Productions and Bad Robot to develop POV (point of view) cameras which were used extensively throughout the picture,” said Bob Bekian of Loyal Studios. “We were very excited and honored to work with Tom Cruise, Brad, and their teams on this project to help to bring the story to life.”  Many of these camera systems were used to pre-visualize the scenes and make adjustments to the action and lighting before the actual take was recorded on the IMAX system.  This strategy helped to develop the complicated, expensive action sequences into what the viewer sees on the screen.

The movie was shot in Budapest, Moscow, Dubai and Vancouver which was made to look like Bangalore.

Tom Cruise on the Burj Khalifa Tower

One of the most exciting sequences involves Tom Cruise scaling the tallest building in the world known as the Berj Khalifa in Dubai. “We provided specialized cameras and lenses that were used to capture some of this amazing footage, and Tom was very respected by the crew in his willingness and ability to do many of the complicated stunts himself,” Bekian added.

Paula Patton of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

Another challenge was to capture the action sequence involving the BMW supercar known as the Vision.”  Obtaining this epic shot caused Bird and his crew to think creatively in order to overcome a number of issues.  Many types of cameras were used throughout the car sequences, including the workhorse Canon 5D DSLR Camera system.

One of the original programs Bekian is producing is called “Hollywood Legends.” “Hollywood Legends provides an opportunity to talk with people who are connected to the Golden Age of Hollywood,” Bekian says.  “Their stories are important to document, and we think that this important Hollywood history should be preserved.”

Launching his web show “Hollywood Legends” with an interview of “Creature from the Black Lagoon” star, Julie Adams,  Bekian is definitely in his element.  “The amazing thing about Julie Adams is the scope of work she has done (150 credits), as well as the other

Hollywood legends she has worked with.” These stars

Julie Adams was born Betty May Adams in Waterloo, Iowa, in 1926.  She grew up in Arkansas, where she discovered her love of acting in a 3rd grade production of “Hansel and Gretel.”  Her passion to act took her to California and was discovered in a swimwear store , soon acting in up to one Western in Hollywood per week.  One of the most interesting points made about her life in the interview is that she has been consistently working in Hollywood since 1949.   Her works range between those westerns in the 40′s to ABC’s “Lost”, which ended in 2010.

BOB AND SONIA BEKIAN DONATE THEIR STUDIOS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL CAUSES

Bob and Sonia Bekian smile for the camera at Loyal Studios, Burbank

Bob and Sonia Bekian

California’s people have begun taking new steps toward that ever promising future of renewable energy and a cleaner environment.  West of the Salinas Valley, and East of Los Angeles, you’ll find massive windmills generating enough electricity to run the entire state…if we learn to use it properly. Some of the top organizations in the country are aiming to bring balance to humanity and the planet.  Groups like Plug in America.org which supports the Tesla energy efficient vehicle, the strong symbol of Energystar, the courageous international works of the Dancing Star Foundation, and the educational voice of the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) are forward thinking organizations, and each of them has found friends among the most influential people in the country–Celebrities.

Understanding that the messages from these organizations need to be heard, Producer Bob Bekian and  Loyal Studios of Los Angeles has donated his Burbank and Santa Monica studios, HD camera Equipment, and crews on repeat occasions to support those that give their time and effort into helping the planet.  Hollywood’s involvement in spreading the word is an integral key to opening minds and educating people on what steps they can take.

“California has always been a trend setting and innovative state, and we have the unique combination of world- class broadcast facilities as well as some of the most notable talent to help get the message out and make real changes in the way we approach our environmental challenges,” notes Bob Bekian, CEO of Loyal Studios.

Academy award winner Don Cheadle, and supermodel Gisele Bunchen at Loyal Studios for a UNEP PSA.

Don Cheadela and Gisele Bunchen

Actor Don Cheadle and the beautiful Gisele Bundchen became ambassadors for the UNEP in 2011 and accepted Bob Bekian’s offer to use the Santa Monica stage to alert the world on ways Humanity can live and sustain the precious, yet shrinking ecosystems of the planet.  John Corbett, most recognizable from his role in “Northern Exposure” worked with the Department of Energy (DOE) to educate people on the levels of the Energystar grading system.  He even urged businesses to battle one another to see who could get the lowest power bill in a months’ time.  The Tesla electric vehicle brought Pluginamerica.org into the homes of millions with their PSA on the accelerating advances of cars that utilize the current in your own home to recharge.  Michael Tobias, head of “Dancing Star Foundation” traveled the globe capturing footage of places most people only see in magazines.  Dancing Star and Loyal Studios collaborated on a 90 minute three-part special entitled, The State of the Earth, focusing on the goal of “helping Humankind protect the natural world.”

Loyal Studios has not only offered its facilities to these organizations to produce the programming, but has taken measures to keep themselves Green; such as using energy efficient studio lighting in the stages, installing Energystar compliant appliances in the kitchens, and establishing a clear in-house recycling program easy for both crew and clients to take part in.

The broadest message that links each of these projects couldn’t be more simple or easy to follow: Even the most miniscule act can create the most noticeable difference. “We want to do our part to help bring awareness to ways people can improve and protect our environment” Bekian added. Loyal Studios and Bekian plan on several other environmental messages in his studios that will include Brad Pitt, Kobe Bryant and Angelina Jolie in 2011.

“Technically we shot on the Panasonic Varicam system along with a Fisher dolly and a 15’ track system” says Bob Bekian, owner of Loyal Studios.  “The client wanted a huge light source, so we provided an ARRI T12 10,000 watt source with a huge Chimera,” Bekian added.  “The whole light system with Chimera reminded me of a Volkswagen due to its large size.”

BOB BEKIAN CO-PRODUCING “THE UNITED MONSTER TALENT AGENCY” WITH GREG NICOTERO

Universal Monsters wait for work in the United Monster Talent Agency, directed by KNB Effects master, Greg Nicotero.

Universal Monsters wait for work

What could be better than the Wolfman and Frankenstein terrorizing the cold starless nights?

How about these famous fiends striking fear into our hearts… and getting paid for it, too!  In a twist on life around the creatures of old Hollywood, renowned special FX make-up artists, Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger (of KNB FX Group) give the famous 1950’s Universal Monsters a different role as employees of The United Monster Talent Agency (UMTA).  The chilling personae of Dracula, the Mummy, the Wolfman, the Bride of Frankenstein, the Invisible Man and the Creature from the Black Lagoon lurk in wait for horror movie work with the headline “We’ll have our people scare your people!.”

AMC posted the eight-minute short just before Halloween, which features guest appearances by “Hostel” director Eli Roth, Dana Gould, “Machete” co-director Robert Rodriguez, and “The Walking Dead’s” own executive producer and director, Frank Darabont (who fittingly plays a director).

The short premiered in Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, late 2010.

After working with Loyal Studios president, Bob Bekian, on the hilarious, star-studded Farley Brothers comedy sketch, “Happy Birthday” (featuring Gerard Butler as a perverse leprechaun), Brett Ratner knew Loyal Studios could be an ideal partner to help film the promo for this “Monster” of a short film.  Bekian, –a life-long fan of the Universal Monsters and classic horror memorabilia collector—jumped at the chance to be the co-producer for UMTA, especially with spectacular make-up only KNB FX studios can provide.

Nicotero has worked in Loyal Studios several times  in the past, and his artistic genius has been applied to the casts of all of  Quentin Tarantino’s, and Robert Rodriquez’ films.  He was noted on the hit make-up reality show, “Face Off”, and more recently as the special effects make-up designer for the graphic novel-inspired zombie series, “The Walking Dead.”

“Everyone who knows me knows that I have loved the universal monsters ever since I was a kid,” says Bob Bekian, owner of Loyal Studios, and co-producer.  “I have a vast collection of original

movie posters and lobby cards, toys, and props from the classic Universal horror library.  I am also excited to be producing an exclusive interview with Julie Adams, the female Lead in “The Creature from the Black Lagoon”, in our Santa Monica stage in May.  The opportunity to work with a legend like Greg Nicotero—whom I‘ve admired in all of his work, combined with the concept for this project—was an honor, and incredibly fun to be involved with. “

KNB FX is the force behind some of Hollywood’s most memorable special effects and movies.  Greg Nicotero opened KNB FX in 1988 with long time friend, Howard Berger. Since then, he has marked his expertise on “Dances with Wolves,” “Sin City,” Transformers” and “Serenity”, “Spawn”, “The Green Mile,” “Inglorious Bastards,” “Predators,” “Splice,” “The Chronicles of Narnia,” and more than 200 credits in both make-up and special effects.

Setting up the shot with the Sony F900

Setting up the shot with the Sony F900

Working in the popular venue of 3D has been a challenge that Greg Nicotero was eager to undertake, as is shown on the incredibly detailed “Final Desintation 3D” and “Pirahna 3D.”  Creating “The United Monster Talent Agency” let Greg go back to the Universal Monsters that inspired him in his youth to bring to life creatures from our darkest imaginations, and to throw you headfirst into the fray of explosive science fiction features.

The “United Monster Talent Agency” stars Jaremy Aiello, Bob Burns and Jeffrey Combs, and was shot on the Sony F900.

HULK HOGAN AND 1800LOAN MART GET INTO THE RING AT LOYAL STUDIOS

Hulk Hogan and Jimmy Hart get into the ring at Loyal Studios for a 1800loan mart commercial.

Hulk Hogan in the ring at Loyal Studios

1800LoanMart has stepped away from the cubicle and into the ring with world famous professional wrestler, Hulk Hogan.  You may have seen the commercial with the lonely boyfriend or the banker, or heard the radio spot for the loan company last summer, focusing on helping individuals with bad or no credit to find a loan.

Terry Bollea –better known to the world as “Hulk Hogan“– has made a formidable career out of bodyslams, documenting family drama, commercials, the latest hit “Hulk Hogan’s Celebrity Championship Wrestling,” on CMT, and his own line of fitness power fuel–“Hogan’s Energy“.  Through it all, the tough-as-nails athlete has always been careful to keep his image –and his family–away from the tabloids and in with the familiar professional wrestling champion aspiring wrestlers of three decades grew up with.

The spot for 1800LoanMart also features Jimmy Hart –best known for “Wrestlemania“, and his presence in the WWE hall of fame.  In order to bring “Hulkamania” and Hart to the world of loans, 800LoanMart called up Bob Bekian with an unusual request:  build a wrestling ring on our pre-lit Santa Monica green screen stage.  Loyal Studios has received many a unique request in the past–such as gymnasts jumping off the roof, skateboarding off the outdoor urban set, and building a pirate ship for Disney’s “Jake and the Neverland Pirates.”  Of course we agreed, and scratched down another memorable moment in Loyal Studios history.

“We are thrilled that Loyal Studios was chosen to shoot these commercials with Hulk Hogan.  He was one-hundred percent professional, and great to work with,” says Bob Bekian, owner of Loyal Studios.  Loyal Studios is a full-service production facility with locations in Santa Monica and Burbank. “It was a bit of a challenge to construct a full sized wrestling ring inside our studio, but we were able to pull it off, and execute the shoot.  We shot the commercials with the RED One, utilizing prime lenses, and constructed a special shooting platform high up over the ring in order to capture a birds-eye shot.”  Bekian adds, “We are always looking to work with our clients and producers to try and facilitate their production objectives and challenges, and in this case we were able to do accommodate their requirements.”  “It was also fun to work with Jimmy Hart, who complimented Hulk’s performance very well.  Both Hulk and Jimmy were very gracious to everyone on the set, which helped to keep the energy strong throughout a 15 hour shoot day.”

BOB BEKIAN DONATES HIS STUDIOS TO GISELE BUNDCHEN AND DON CHEADLE FOR UNEP

Academy award winner Don Cheadle, and supermodel Gisele Bunchen at Loyal Studios for a UNEP PSA.

Don Cheadela and Gisele Bunchen

The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) has been involved in environmental outreach services since 1972.  Though they do an amazing job on their own of educating curious world citizens about the environment through their extensive and detailed website and programs, various celebrities have volunteered to stand alongside them to support their cause.

Supermodel Gisele Bundchen, and Academy award nominee, Don Cheadle have both been appointed as ambassadors for the UNEP, exuding great effort to help bring awareness and support to the organization’s important work.

Loyal Studios in Santa Monica was proud to lend its studio to Bundchen and Cheadle having had previously worked with Cheadele on a commercial in January, 2011.  The commercial was co-produced by Loyal Studios owner, Bob Bekian.

Their relationship continued when Cheadle formally asked Bekian to be directly involved in the spot for UNEP.  Bekian happily donated his facility and production services, equipment, and crew for the project in support of their cause.

The UNEP’s mission statement is, “To provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.”

Bundchen, Cheadle, and Loyal Studios set their focus on putting the word out about the importance of what Humanity utilizes the Earth for, while working in conjunction with our natural ecosystems to create a sustainable green economy.

BILLY CRYSTAL INTERVIEWED BY THE BBC AT LOYAL STUDIOS

Bob Bekian and Billy Crystal smile for the camera

Billy Crystal is a name that is synonymous with comedy, and also with many important causes. He has created incredible characters such as Mike Wazowski of “Monsters Inc.,” Harry Burns of “When Harry Met Sally,” Mitch Robbins of “City Slickers,” Larry from “Throw Mamma From The Train,”to name a few. His many roles  on the sketch comedy series “Saturday Night Live” are legendary. Loyal Studios has had the esteemed privilege of playing host to various projects and productions that Mr. Crystal has been involved in.  After his first shoot in our Santa Monica stage, he was so impressed that Loyal Studios has become his boutique studio of choice.

“We’re always very happy to work with Billy Crystal, who is not only funny, but also takes his causes very seriously; such as endorsing the Jewish University”  says Bob Bekian, owner of Loyal studios.

The eight-time Oscar host has supported the performing arts department of the Jewish University for over a decade, understanding how important it is to keep the flame of artistic freedom alive among the students.  We were fortunate to have his creative force at Loyal Studios for this project. “Many celebrities use teleprompters and have others write their lines” says Bekian. ” But Billy Crystal showed incredible professionalism and delivered his lines expertly to the camera”. Its refreshing to see that level of discipline.

Another of his projects was a commercial for IBM and his involvement as host for the 2009 Impact conference in Las Vegas. Once again Billy Crystal delivered his lines flawlessley and even added some improvisation that had the entire crew and studio laughing.

Billy Crystal talks about growing up around Billy Holiday

Billy Crystal talks about growing up around Billy Hoiday

Another project Billy Crystal did at Loyal Studios was  for a documentary by the BBC in focusing on the life of the famous jazz singer, Billie Holiday.  He spoke of his childhood growing up in New York City with Billie as his babysitter on a number of occasions, and how much she influenced his life for the better.  His Uncle owned Commodore Records, which recorded many of Billie Holiday’s songs.  In a quote on the BBC documentary in 2009 entitled “Angel of Harlem”, Billy Crystal looks back with fondness as he retells of his uncle’s shop on ‘Swing street.’  “For my part, I am so proud that my family was involved in the record that Time magazine would one day vote ‘the most important release of the 20th century’.”
